Help for Nathan
ok so Nathan I hear you have a character that have an annoying lightsource for a head
Your younger self could have made that easier for you but alas, he did not.
So when it comes to his lighting, I’m gonna start on a dark setting cause it’s much easier to figure out how it works if you start dark![]()
This is what I think he’d look like in the dark. Pretty standard but 3 things I want to point out:
1) His arm will cast a light, and a very strong one. However the majority of his arm will be in shadow because the light isn’t hitting the rest of his arm. The glove is stopping that. There would be a very weak light point because it’s faded and muted. It won’t just be one tone! That applies to shading in general but you know that already :P
2) Since his head is EXTREMELY bright, the only thing he’s gonna affect when he’s looking forward is the scarf. The scarf is gonna get the brunt of the lighting, so it’s lighting is SUPER CONTRAST GO.
3) As a result it will create a casting shadow, this can vary depending on how your guy is looking. Like this;![]()
if he was looking down, the shadow would be much longer. However the torso would be lit up etc. Looking forward would make the torso more muted.
Another example is if he’s looking to the side the shadow would shift, the light more on his arm and so on. You’ll always have a shadow on your scarf but where it is really depends on how you draw his head!
Now thats all confusing enough he now has the sun to contend with!!!
Always try to work from dark to light with characters like this, and focus on that main light source first. As you can see the sun is creating the most light, so a back light source is done first. Once you have that down then do the head, as the lighting for that is easily done given his head position.
I could’ve added a lot more darker tones n stuff but this is just a quick idea/ helper
ALL DONE OK
OH WOW THANK YOU VERY MUCH
this is very helpful, ma’am!!! Thanks ;_;
